Income Opportunity March 30, 2008

Income Opportunity   This sign, and many like it, have been seen at various intersections around town. It is usually placed near a stop sign or light pole. The four guys who know nothing have talked about it and find it a bit intriguing.  The sign reads:

“Income Opportunity, Breakthru Technology, $800.00 - $1,000.00/mo, part time – from home.”

There are so many questions that come to mind. If someone has an exciting “breakthru” technology they want to get out to the public, would these magic marker, hand lettered, corrugated plastic signs be the most effective tool to spread the word? If this is a new technology and you are recruiting folks to sell your idea, wouldn’t you go after people who have access to current technological advances like Internet, telephone, maybe newspapers? Do you really want your staff to be the sort of people who stop at a traffic signal, don’t pay attention to the traffic but instead read these signs stuck in the snow bank, search for a pen and paper to jot down the phone number, all the while traffic piles up behind them? Or maybe it is aimed at foot traffic. Hey, this is winter in Minnesota! Even if I choose to go out for a brisk walk, I’m not going to stop and remove my mittens to write down this information.

Is this the way other ”breakthru” technologies were first marketed? Did Bill Gates sell his first personal computers this way? Did Henry Ford post these signs along horse paths near Detroit? And the payback. $800 to $1,000 is OK, but come on, if this is so “breakthru” shouldn’t we be making a few more bucks than that? Even if it is part time?

We actually thought maybe the technology is the weather proof signs. These babies have been through snow, sleet, road salt, UV rays, wind and dog urine and look just as fresh as the day they first appeared. The new technology can’t be an automatic spell checker for hand lettered signs. That would be a major “breakthru”. I had to find out. TR took the photo and blotted out the phone number from the picture. I had to do a “drive by”,  jot the number down (after removing my mittens while waiting at a green traffic light) and give it a ring.

I was hoping for a taped message. No such luck. A very nice man explained that the breakthrough technology is a way to process vitamins so they are easily absorbed by the body. The income opportunity is selling the vitamins. Ah well, I may know nothing about most things, but I found out about selling vitamins. I make no judgement on the product. There is much I don’t know about health care and wellness. During our conversation the man mentioned that this vitamin company has recently spent over $100 million on advertising. Wow. That is a lot of little plastic signs. Once again, the big money is in marketing. Vitamins are great, but I just wish I had stock in magic marker and corrugated plastic.

If I could only play “Jerry’s Breakdown”… March 26, 2008

Having been to Nashville a couple of times for the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS) convention, I have come to realize that there are a lot of amazing guitar players in the world. Yes, and I will even admit some amazing mandolin players – like jeph. It seems though that any self respecting guitar player at CAAS not only has to have a deep catalog of Chet Atkin songs but Jerry Reed songs too – especially “Jerry’s Breakdown”. (Ah, if I could only play “Jerry’s Breakdown”, then I would be a guitar player!) That said, check out this version of a Reed classic…

Did he just say “modial interaction of magneto-reluctance and capacitve directance”? I think I have found another guy who knows nothing. Check out this video on the Rockwell Retro Encabulator.  The video was created quit a few years ago.

Listening to the radio and watching TV news lately has got me down. Maybe it’s that, plus several other life events, combining into some toxic brew that doesn’t go down well. Something is in the air. The ugliness of politics, the brutality of Muslim extremists, the depth of our economic troubles, the Orwellian reality of political correctness…and personal life with the weight of college loans, my kids’ job outlook, octogenarian parents, etc. I could go on, but you get the point.

What I need is a vacation. Not a trip, not a hotel, though that’s nice too. I need regular renewal of my spirit. I have decided it’s an issue of ‘intake’. We humans are designed to run best when we feed our brains with the right mix of nutrients, just as our bodies need balanced nutrients, blah, blah, blah. We all hear that kind of thing, but I have ignored it lately. Oh sure, I attend a weekly Bible study group and do the daily homework (most of the time). But is that all that’s necessary to protect my melon from mental meltdown?

I’m going to take little vacations for positive input. I don’t mean that “finding the divinity within” nonsense… I mean following the Bible’s mental mandate:

“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

I’ll be honest. I haven’t spent much effort to pursue that. How many dragons can one slay on an empty stomach… or an overly burdened heart?

Netanyahu tells envoys he could stop rockets March 14, 2008

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert briefed opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu on the security situation for the first time in a few months on Thursday, at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem.

Relations between the two men have deteriorated since a scathing speech Netanyahu delivered to the Knesset following the Winograd Report’s publication in January and reached new heights last week amid mutual recriminations in a meeting at the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Both sides described Thursday’s meeting as businesslike and cordial and said that all security and diplomatic issues were discussed.

Also on Thursday, Netanyahu briefed 20 foreign ambassadors at Tel Aviv’s Carlton hotel and told them that the situation in the western Negev was intolerable and that he could fix it. He criticized Olmert for telling Ashkelon residents to get used to living under rocket fire.

“A prime minister who says the public has to get used to rocket attacks must be replaced by a prime minister who can bring about quiet and serenity,” Netanyahu said.

Netanyahu also told the envoys that the negotiations with Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas could cause harm, because if he returned to his people empty-handed it would cause him grave political damage.

He said that all of Jerusalem must remain in Israeli hands, to prevent it from falling to Hamas and to keep it safe for people from around the world.
